A prayer about Rewards

When there seems to be no reward for following God

God,

I like results. I usually choose my activities based on what will bring the maximum reward and the greatest sense of accomplishment. This is why I struggle sometimes to obey you. I know that you reward obedience, because your Word gives me examples such as Caleb, who inherited the Promised Land, and the widow Ruth, who was given a husband. But these were physical blessings. I struggle to obey when I know the rewards aren’t material. For example, I know that my obedience to you often protects me from unseen evil and allows you to lead me along paths of righteousness into service that pleases you and helps others. Those are wonderful reasons to obey you, so why do I see them as less important than the things that bring me immediate, tangible rewards? Lord, help me to let go of my desire for material blessings or earthly prosperity. Give me a desire for spiritual rewards—the marvelous gifts of salvation and eternal life, the blessings of your presence in my life, the treasure of your Word, and the wonderful character traits of godliness, integrity, wisdom, hope, peace, love, and a good reputation. These rewards are eternal and priceless.

Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Matthew 6:19-20
