A prayer about Fearing God

When I need more of the fear of God

Almighty God,

Fearing you is not the same as being afraid of you. If I were afraid of you, I would stay away. But fearing you means being awed by your power and goodness, and that draws me closer to you and the blessings you provide. Perhaps the fear I have for you is like the respect I might have for a beloved teacher, coach, parent, or mentor. My respect motivates me to do my best and to avoid doing anything that would hurt you. May I fear you because of your awesome power, and love you because you have used that power to rescue me from sin. What could be more amazing? I fully recognize that I don’t deserve it. But how I rejoice that instead of punishing me, you shower me with mercy and forgiveness. May that kind of fear draw me into the security of your loving arms day after day.
