A Prayer About Discontentment

A prayer about Discontentment

When I’m never happy

O Lord,

Deep within my heart lurks a feeling of discontentment that is spreading. If I can’t find a way to stop it, I’m afraid I’ll wind up being disgruntled about everything. Every glass I look at seems half empty rather than half full, and I know this is affecting how I live. Through my disillusioned eyes, I don’t have enough money, my spouse isn’t the soul mate I’d dreamed of, my church isn’t meeting my needs, my work is less than inspiring, and I can’t do everything I want to do. Oh, where is this all taking me? I could ignore my feelings and just keep doing what I need to do, but that won’t cure this restless attitude that is hounding me. Lord, I know this mind-set is dangerous because it causes me to focus on myself—what I don’t have and what I’m not able to do. I need to change my thinking; that is the antidote. Please show me how. Transform my mind! Whenever I find myself thinking about what I don’t have, help me to stop and take account of what I do have instead. I pray that I would keep my eyes on you and that you would show me how to serve those around me. If I take my eyes off myself, my discontentment may gradually turn into true satisfaction. Then, as I make you and others happy, I will find joy myself.

If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. Matthew 16:25
