A Prayer About Disappointment

A prayer about Disappointment

When I feel constantly disappointed

O Father,

I deal with disappointment in some form almost every day, and I must come to grips with this issue in my heart. Disappointment sometimes comes because I don’t feel “good enough.” It also comes because I expect too much of myself and others. When I don’t meet my own expectations, I wallow in regret and self-doubt. When others don’t meet my expectations, I’m quick to blame them and shame them. Disappointment carries some heavy baggage: discouragement, depression, anger, bitterness, and shame. O God, I need your help to break this cycle. Why am I trying to be perfect when only you are perfect? Why do I expect others to meet my needs when you are the only one who can truly be everything to me? Father, help me to stop dreaming about what could be and start focusing on what is truth—what is real in the here and now. Help me to be thankful for what I have instead of always expecting more. O God, next time I’m tempted to place unrealistic expectations on myself, may I ask, “Lord, what do you expect of me?” When I expect others to satisfy all my needs, may I turn to you say, “Lord, you know my needs, and you are everything to me.” Lord God, may you begin this most important change in my heart today.

This hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love. Romans 5:5
