A prayer about the Past

When I wonder how I can live a godly life with sin in my past

Dear Lord,

My memories of the past are like a photo album that contains snapshots of my life. Some of these snapshots show happy moments, triumphs, family celebrations, or quiet joys. I treasure those. Other snapshots record tragedies, failures, words, or acts that cause me great shame. I would love to lock these away—to tear out the snapshots that expose parts of my life I’d rather forget. Yet your Word tells me that you can redeem my past. I’m encouraged by the example of the apostle Paul, whose memory album must have been full of snapshots from his days of persecuting Christians. He could have carried an immense burden of regret. But you forgave him, and his life became an example of your amazing grace. You gave him the strength to stop wallowing in the past and to look ahead to the glorious promise he had in Christ. May I do the same, Lord. Help me fully accept your forgiveness, and may my past not distract me from the purpose you have for me.

I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us. Philippians 3:13-14
