A prayer about Self-sacrifice

When I need to put aside my self-interests

Lord Jesus,

You have called me to put others before myself. I know that’s the best path, but some days it goes against my every desire! Left to myself, too often I will seek my own good over the good of others. Whether it’s as minor as wanting to choose the restaurant when we go out or as major as ignoring a family member’s significant need, it’s easy to serve my own self-interests. But when I remember your example, I am rebuked. You put aside your own divine nature and let yourself be humbled, even to the point of death on the cross—all because you put others’ well-being above your own. May I learn from your example. Transform my heart and make me willing to put aside my own needs for the good of others. I pray that when I do that, others will see your love shining through me.

Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. Philippians 2:3-4
