A Prayer About Letting Go

A prayer about Letting Go

When I need to give my problems to God

O Lord,

My heart breaks when I think about the story in Exodus 1–2 of Moses’ mother, who raised him in the shadow of Pharaoh’s decree that all male Hebrew children should die. She cared for her son as long as she could, but then she had to let him go—literally, as she placed him in a basket on the river—entrusting him to your care. I’m clinging so hard to things in my own life, and I wonder how to find the courage to let go. Help me to recognize that when situations are beyond my control, I need to do what is right for as long as I can, and then trust you to take it from there. The more I try to control a situation, the less I hold on to you. That’s not what I want, Lord. Please give me the faith to be obedient and to wait for you to work. Teach me that letting go doesn’t mean giving up; it means that I’m watching for your next move. May I remember Moses’ mother, who entrusted her son to you and then received him back in a way she never could have imagined. You know best and you care about me, so I place this situation in your loving, capable hands.

We put our hope in the LORD. He is our help and our shield. In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. Let your unfailing love surround us, LORD, for our hope is in you alone. Psalm 33:20-22
