A Prayer About Habits

A prayer about Habits

When I need to break a bad habit

Lord God,

Voices in my culture tell me that I am a victim who has no power to resist the temptations around me. It’s not my fault, I hear; heredity, environment, or circumstances are to blame. But this kind of thinking makes me only more vulnerable to my sinful desires. The wonderful truth is that you are more powerful than anything else that might seek to control me. Thank you, Lord. The fact is, I’ve let wrong desires sneak in and set up bad habits. Now I’m trying to fix those bad habits by taking back control of my thinking, but it’s not working—I’m not able to on my own. Help me to realize that you alone can change me. Through your Holy Spirit within me, I have access to your transforming power. Unleash that in me! As I ask for your help and seek support from other believers, may you break the chains that hold me. Set me free from bad habits.

Do not let sin control the way you live; do not give in to sinful desires. Do not let any part of your body become an instrument of evil to serve sin. Instead, give yourselves completely to God, for you were dead, but now you have new life. So use your whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God. Sin is no longer your master, for you no longer live under the requirements of the law. Instead, you live under the freedom of God’s grace. Romans 6:12-14
