A prayer about Enemies

When I wonder how I can love my enemies

Lord Jesus,

You taught that we are to love our enemies and to do good to those who curse us. But how do I do that when it goes against everything I feel? When I think of people who have hurt me or my loved ones, my wounded pride and my desire to protect my family stand in the way of forgiveness. Yet your Word, in Romans 5:10, tells me that I was once your enemy until you forgave me. How can I not follow your example? Teach me to see my enemies as you do—as people in need of grace and forgiveness. As I pray for people who have hurt me, please renew a sense of compassion in my heart. Work in me so that my response to my enemies might be full of your love and grace. Perhaps someone will see your forgiveness in me and will be moved to turn to you.

Love your enemies! Do good to them. Lend to them without expecting to be repaid. Then your reward from heaven will be very great, and you will truly be acting as children of the Most High, for he is kind to those who are unthankful and wicked. You must be compassionate, just as your Father is compassionate. Luke 6:35-36
