A Prayer About Emotions

A prayer about Emotions

When my emotions are overwhelming me

Father,

My emotions are nothing to be ashamed of; they are a good gift from you. I’m grateful for the ability to grieve when I am hurting, to rejoice in exuberance when I have something to celebrate, to feel fear when I need to beware of a legitimate threat, and to be outraged at injustice and wrongdoing. These are good and right uses of my emotions. You know that sometimes, though, I allow them too much freedom. My feelings can tempt me to seek the pleasures of sin, or I lose control and lapse into behavior that hurts me and others. That’s where I am right now, Lord. I need your help to regain self-control. As you conform me to your image, teach me to use my emotions to reflect your character. Then I’ll be able to love others in healthy ways. Please help me to understand my feelings and direct them productively, not destructively. May I guard my heart so that it will not be overwhelmed by out-of-control emotions but will follow diligently after you.

The Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! Galatians 5:22-23
