A prayer about Defeat

When I feel as though I’m not experiencing success

Heavenly Father,

Often I find myself discontented because I want to be the best—the smartest, prettiest, best liked, fastest, most polished—and that simply isn’t possible. Other times I’m discontented because I try to do something significant and end up failing. But I know it’s neither realistic nor healthy to expect things to always go just as I’d like. The truth is, failing can help me stay humble and dependent on you. If I always succeeded, I might become arrogant and overly confident in myself. Keep me from that! I ask that you would use my times of defeat to grow my character. Teach me to be humbly dependent on you. Show me how to accept the woman I am, with the unique gifts and abilities you have given me. May I rely on you fully.

You ought to know, dear brothers and sisters, about the trouble we went through in the province of Asia. We were crushed and overwhelmed beyond our ability to endure, and we thought we would never live through it. In fact, we expected to die. But as a result, we stopped relying on ourselves and learned to rely only on God, who raises the dead. And he did rescue us from mortal danger, and he will rescue us again. We have placed our confidence in him, and he will continue to rescue us. 2 Corinthians 1:8-10
