A Prayer About Obedience

A prayer about Obedience - Applying what I read in Scripture

ALMIGHTY GOD,

As I prepare for each day, I look into the mirror to make sure my face, hair, and clothes are presentable. I check my reflection because I want to see what I look like in case I have to make any changes (a hair out of place, something on my face). How silly I would be to see what needs correcting and then do nothing about it. Yet as today’s passage in James reminds me, I can approach your Word that way (and often do). I learn the context of a specific passage and work to understand your timeless message. I even apply it, knowing what life-corrections to make. But then I seem to forget those lessons. Forgive me, Lord. The Bible is truly “the perfect law that sets [me] free.” And I’m glad that I have many ways to access it. But reading and understanding are not enough. I must obey.

If you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it. James 1:23-25
