A Prayer About Loosening My Grip
A prayer about Loosening My Grip
When I hold on to what doesn’t matter
GOD,
Please help me loosen my grip on things that don’t matter and tighten my grip on those that do. Reflecting back on the day and the previous days and weeks, I’m afraid that often I have it all backward, majoring in the minors instead. From time to time, for example, in various relationships I become annoyed or insulted over an unintended slight. At times my schedule, my to-do list, seems more important than caring for others. Even at church, I find my mind wandering away from worship and toward insignificant issues and concerns. Tightening my grip on what matters most means making sure that nothing comes between you and me, that I keep our relationship at the top of my priorities. It also means thinking about whether my life honors you. By watching me, people should be able to see Jesus or, at least, someone trying to be like him. And I should always value people over any possession. By your Spirit, give me the courage to hold things loosely and the strength to hold firmly to you.
You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. Deuteronomy 6:5
