A Prayer About Grace

When I consider God’s kindness toward me

MOST GRACIOUS HEAVENLY FATHER,

I am beginning to get a glimpse of what motivated John Newton to write the words to his classic hymn, “Amazing Grace.” I have often sung that song and have affirmed for years that salvation is by grace alone and that I don’t deserve your favor. But when I consider the depths of my depravity—my sinful nature, willful acts of disobedience, neglect of spending time with you, thoughts that constantly violate your commands and desires, lack of faith, and an almost eagerness to go my own way—I can scarcely believe that you pay any attention to me at all, let alone that you love and forgive me. I know that Jesus died for all who believe, throughout the whole world and the millennia—millions and millions of people. But he died for me, paying the penalty for my sin on the cross. I can never repay your kindness toward me, of course—but you don’t want me to try. You just want my heart. In humble surrender, I worship you, Lord. What profound and amazing grace!
