A Prayer About God’s Call

When I think about effectively serving the Savior

O LORD,

I admit that I get a bit uneasy when I hear someone say, “God called me . . .” to a specific task or ministry. And I feel very uncomfortable when a church leader asserts that God’s people should not be involved in various ministries (teaching Sunday school, singing in the choir, visiting people in the hospital, serving as a church officer, and so forth) unless they have been called. What does that mean, Lord? I haven’t heard your voice, received a notice in the mail, or seen writing in the sky. I have your Word, and as I read and study, I see that “call” is mentioned several times. I know that you have chosen and called me to come to you. You have also appointed me to do your work in the world, using my spiritual gifts to build up the church and share the good news with others. So please help me know where I can best serve you, living out your will for me. I want to be faithful, responding to your clear call.
