A Prayer About Empathy

When I interact with someone in need

FATHER,

Today a friend was sharing a story of personal need. This friend was bothered, visibly upset. I stopped what I was doing and gave the appearance of listening—leaning in, nodding appropriately, and even saying, “Uh-huh.” But that was phony; I was thinking about my next conversation, other tasks on my to-do list, and how much time the conversation was consuming. That seems to be a tendency for me lately—I’m so preoccupied with my own needs and schedule that I cannot see or hear anyone else. I don’t like it when I act that way, and I know that you don’t either. As I read the Bible, I see how Jesus took time to reach out and relate to each person. Help me remember to pray for the person as I speak, to look my friend in the eye, and to really listen. Give me feelings like yours, genuine empathy for the individual. I want to be known as someone who truly cares about others, not to enhance my reputation but to help them and to glorify you.

All of you should be of one mind. Sympathize with each other. Love each other as brothers and sisters. Be tenderhearted, and keep a humble attitude. 1 Peter 3:8
