A prayer about Contentment

When dissatisfaction sets in

Several times today I felt frustrated with my current situation, as though I was somehow being shortchanged. A TV ad caught my imagination as it promoted a “must have” product—a labor-saving device, the newest electronic toy, or something even bigger like an exotic trip or a new car. I learned about a friend’s latest adventure, exciting promotion at work, or new all-the-bells-and-whistles possession. I should do or have that, I thought. That should be me! I fantasized a different life from what I am currently living and desired more of whatever good I now have. The apostle Paul experienced all sides—everything and nothing, up and down, in-crowd member and outsider, the heights of academic and spiritual acclaim and the depths of torture and prison, yet he could be content in every situation . . . because he found his life in you. Please give me that secret of contentment, Savior. Help me know that all I need is you.

I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. Philippians 4:11-12
