A Prayer About Distractions

When I look away from my goal

O LORD,

Ever since I first trusted Christ as my Savior, my goal in life has been to glorify you, to honor you with my thoughts, words, and deeds. But I can become distracted as my eyes are drawn elsewhere, like a child whose attention is captured by a new toy. Some days the distraction is a relationship issue; at other times, it’s a conflict at work or in my career. Today, I was pulled aside by concerns over dwindling finances and insecurity about the future. I think of Peter when he took a few steps out of the boat onto the water and then began to sink when he took his eyes off Jesus. Today in the same way, the waves of worry began washing over me. I forgot your promises to be with me always, to care for me, and to uphold me. I looked at the problems and not at the Savior. Please help me, I pray, to “turn [my] eyes upon Jesus, look full in his wonderful face. And the things of earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of his glory and grace.”

Look straight ahead, and fix your eyes on what lies before you. Mark out a straight path for your feet; stay on the safe path. Don’t get sidetracked. Proverbs 4:25-27
