A Prayer About Controlling The Tongue
A prayer about Controlling The Tongue
When I say what I shouldn’t
FATHER,
I blew it today—my tongue, my words, and my tone of voice got me in trouble again. I had opinions on everything and couldn’t shut my mouth. And when others were speaking, I wasn’t really listening—I was formulating my answers while waiting for my chance to speak. Then, in a disagreement, instead of keeping quiet and presenting my side with a measured, thoughtful response, I lost my cool and blurted caustic, hateful words that served no purpose except to give me a measure of perverse satisfaction. My expressions were intended to wound, and they succeeded. I’m disciplined in so many areas, but not this one. Why do I have such a difficult time keeping my mouth shut or at least, speaking positively instead of negatively? I am so weak. Forgive me, Lord, for not honoring you in my speech. I want to be different, to care more about the other person than about winning an argument. Above all, I want to care for you. Control my thoughts, feelings, and voice. May my words reflect your work in my life.
The tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches. But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire. . . . People can tame all kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and fish, but no one can tame the tongue. It is restless and evil, full of deadly poison. Sometimes it praises our Lord and Father, and sometimes it curses those who have been made in the image of God. James 3:5, 7-9
