A Prayer About Making Progress

When I consider God’s transforming work in my life

FATHER,

When I gave my life to Christ, that signaled the end of a long journey. I had been living apart from you and was tired of running, and you sought me, found me, and brought me home. But that was also the beginning of another journey—my life together with you. Since then you have been working in me, day by day, little by little, transforming me more and more into the image of your Son. I know I am far from that goal. The process will continue until I see Jesus face to face. But I’m making progress. Some of your lessons have been more difficult than others. And some I’ve had to learn more than once. Often I seem to take two steps forward but then one step back. Forgive me, Lord, for not listening, not learning, and not trusting. I want to continue to make progress, to grow in my faith. I know that my salvation is secure, that I am safe in your hands, but I don’t want to accept the status quo.

We are already God’s children, but he has not yet shown us what we will be like when Christ appears. But we do know that we will be like him, for we will see him as he really is. And all who have this eager expectation will keep themselves pure, just as he is pure. 1 John 3:2-3
