18:7–11 Loyalty and Commitment Jesus’ commitment to his mission is twofold: he protects his disciples (17:12), and he does not shrink from the suffering that is upon him. His defense of his disciples is the opposite of Judas’s treachery; his commitment to the destiny set for him by the Father contrasts with Peter’s violent attempt to fend off the high priest’s servant.

18:15–27 Unique Jesus faces his interrogators in ways that contrast with Peter—who is also being interrogated—and with his own interrogators. Jesus stands by everything he said in public meetings, while Peter cowardly denies he knows anything about Jesus. Jesus appeals to due legal process, while authorities break the laws they should uphold.

18:33–37 The King of the Jews Jesus as King is dangerous—but the danger lies in his commitment to reveal and practice truth, inviting others to expose themselves to God’s discerning light (3:16–21). He is challenging the power of darkness, not the power of Rome.
