John 17 - NIV God’s Justice Bible

17:13–19 Sanctity, Not Safety Jesus’ main concern for his disciples is not their safety, but their joyful obedience to God’s truth. Jesus has carried out his mission in total obedience to the Father, and his disciples share the same commission.
17:20–21 Unity, Not Exclusivity The unity of believers is not a product of social engineering, nor is it an end in itself. Its foundation is the transforming power of the revelation of the Father through his Son. This power can create a community with individuals who love each other, called out of a selfish and fragmented world. Thus the purpose of Christian unity is not to create an elite society, but to serve Jesus’ mission. It is meant to draw others into the fellowship, not create a defensive and sterile circle.
