But work was deeply affected by the Fall. The beautiful cooperative nature of creation at the beginning was marred, now requiring hard work to bring it into grudging submission. Humans remain stewards of the earth but their sinfulness and nature’s groaning (Romans 8:22) now make work for humans a constant necessity and only partly satisfying.Genesis 2:2-3On the seventh day God had finished his work of creation, so he rested from all his work. There is a sense in which temporary unemployment is rest, but the Bible never describes rest as a permanent objective for creatures made in God’s image. And people should eat and drink and enjoy the fruits of their labor, for these are gifts from God.Alongside the abundance of opportunity is our haunting sense of eternity. However full and active this life may be, there is a weight of inadequacy that informs us we have not and cannot do enough. Work is important and employment is meaningful, but it does not meet our ultimate need for God. Life at its best includes our acknowledgement of God and our pursuit of work and leisure as his gifts.

So the Twelve called a meeting of all the believers. They said, “We apostles should spend our time teaching the word of God, not running a food program. And so, brothers, select seven men who are well respected and are full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will give them this responsibility. Then we apostles can spend our time in prayer and teaching the word.”2 Thessalonians 3:10-13Even while we were with you, we gave you this command: “Those unwilling to work will not get to eat.” Yet we hear that some of you are living idle lives, refusing to work and meddling in other people’s business. We command such people and urge them in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and work to earn their own living. As for the rest of you, dear brothers and sisters, never get tired of doing good.In Bible times there were few social safety nets in place. Various types of incapacity (physical, mental, age-related) could only be survived with the voluntary or directed help of others. Charity, hospitality, and assistance were left to individuals, family, or the church. The government was not a source for welfare. As the early church grew, the early believers almost immediately embraced the care of the destitute, widows, and other needy people. But there was also an emphasis on personal and family care as the first plan for supplying resources and employment to people in need.
