Does being modest mean I shouldn’t try to look nice?

Ecclesiastes 9:7-8So go ahead. Eat your food with joy, and drink your wine with a happy heart, for God approves of this! Wear fine clothes, with a splash of cologne!

Matthew 6:17“When you fast, comb your hair and wash your face.”

Matthew 7:20“Yes, just as you can identify a tree by its fruit, so you can identify people by their actions.”

1 Corinthians 6:19-20Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.

Colossians 3:17Whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father.

We should not be obsessed with physical appearance, but neither should we ignore it. How we present ourselves is, in part, a reflection of who we are and plays a role in our ability to interact with others. Our bodies are dwellings of the Holy Spirit, so we should protect and care for the place where he lives. The more we keep ourselves fit and healthy, the more energy we will have to serve him. Keeping our bodies clean and pleasant-looking provides more opportunities to become involved in other’s lives and influence them with the good news of Jesus. However, dressing in a provocative way that tempts someone of the opposite sex, or showing off our wealth in a way that humiliates others is immodest and inappropriate.
