Can I show modesty and still have fun? - Modesty - TouchPoints
Nehemiah 8:10Nehemiah continued, “Go and celebrate with a feast of rich foods and sweet drinks, and share gifts of food with people who have nothing prepared. This is a sacred day before our Lord. Don’t be dejected and sad, for the joy of the Lord is your strength!”
Proverbs 13:9The life of the godly is full of light and joy, but the light of the wicked will be snuffed out.
Matthew 25:21“The master was full of praise. ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let’s celebrate together!’”
1 Timothy 3:2So a church leader must be a man whose life is above reproach. He must be faithful to his wife. He must exercise self-control, live wisely, and have a good reputation. He must enjoy having guests in his home, and he must be able to teach.
Modesty is not about a lack of emotions, fun, or celebration. Joy, fun, and celebration, as God intends, are important parts of Christian faith because they lift our spirits and help us see the beauty and meaning in life. However, even in celebration, our appearance and conduct should not be provocative or inappropriate.
John 2:9-10When the master of ceremonies tasted the water that was now wine, not knowing where it had come from (though, of course, the servants knew), he called the bridegroom over. “A host always serves the best wine first,” he said. “Then, when everyone has had a lot to drink, he brings out the less expensive wine. But you have kept the best until now!”
Revelation 19:6-9Then I [the apostle John] heard again what sounded like the shout of a vast crowd or the roar of mighty ocean waves or the crash of loud thunder: “Praise the Lord! For the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns. Let us be glad and rejoice, and let us give honor to him. For the time has come for the wedding feast of the Lamb, and his bride has prepared herself. She has been given the finest of pure white linen to wear.” For the fine linen represents the good deeds of God’s holy people. And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding feast of the Lamb.”
God is not opposed to fun, celebration, or enjoyment. He created them! Jesus miraculously provided wine for a wedding as his very first miracle, and the return of Christ will initiate a wedding feast where all of heaven and earth will celebrate!
1 Peter 4:3You have had enough in the past of the evil things that godless people enjoy—their immorality and lust, their feasting and drunkenness and wild parties, and their terrible worship of idols.
Modesty is violated when our fun becomes self-centered or indulgent, when it involves sinful acts, or when we put ourselves in conditions that can easily tempt others to sin.
