Will God forgive me if I do get divorced?

Ephesians 3:18-19May you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.

1 John 1:9If we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.

1 John 2:1-6My dear children, I am writing this to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate who pleads our case before the Father. He is Jesus Christ, the one who is truly righteous. He himself is the sacrifice that atones for our sins—and not only our sins but the sins of all the world. And we can be sure that we know him if we obey his commandments. If someone claims, “I know God,” but doesn’t obey God’s commandments, that person is a liar and is not living in the truth. But those who obey God’s word truly show how completely they love him. That is how we know we are living in him. Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did.

Sometimes divorce is a necessary response to sin. Other times divorce is itself a sin. No sin is beyond God’s forgiveness. Nothing we do to someone else and nothing someone else does to us can separate us from God’s unconditional love. No matter what has happened to us, God can restore us to wholeness. At the same time, God’s forgiveness is not an excuse to get a divorce. It never excuses us from working hard to restore a broken relationship with our spouse. God grants forgiveness to those who are sincere, who are truly sorry. If we approach divorce with selfish motives and a hard heart, we are not being sincere with God.
