What are the consequences of ignoring God’s boundaries?

Genesis 3:16-17, 23He [God] said to the woman, “I will sharpen the pain of your pregnancy, and in pain you will give birth. And you will desire to control your husband, but he will rule over you.” And to the man he said, “Since you listened to your wife and ate from the tree whose fruit I commanded you not to eat, the ground is cursed because of you. All your life you will struggle to scratch a living from it.” . . . So the Lord God banished them from the Garden of Eden, and he sent Adam out to cultivate the ground from which he had been made.

God dealt with Adam and Eve based on their violation of his boundaries. Their excuses and attempts to pass the blame didn’t prevent his justice. Their lives, and every human life after theirs, changed dramatically. We experience the consequences of that original sin every day as we live in this fallen world.

Proverbs 19:18Discipline your children while there is hope. Otherwise you will ruin their lives.

Hebrews 12:5-7, 10Have you forgotten the encouraging words God spoke to you as his children? He said, “My child, don’t make light of the Lord’s discipline, and don’t give up when he corrects you. For the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes each one he accepts as his child.” As you endure this divine discipline, remember that God is treating you as his own children. Who ever heard of a child who is never disciplined by its father? . . . For our earthly fathers disciplined us for a few years, doing the best they knew how. But God’s discipline is always good for us, so that we might share in his holiness.

Discipline done well is a form of love. Our earthly parents likely made mistakes in the way they disciplined us, but God never makes mistakes. God’s discipline is always given out of his love and care for us, and it helps us to become more like him.

Psalm 94:12Joyful are those you discipline, Lord, those you teach with your instructions.

Hebrews 12:11No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it’s painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way.

God’s discipline may feel painful, but it is a blessing that saves us from far greater pain and leads to far greater joy.

Isaiah 38:16Lord, your discipline is good, for it leads to life and health. You restore my health and allow me to live!

God’s boundaries lead to life and well-being. When we wander from God’s ways (as we are prone to do), his timely discipline moves us toward repentance and renewal.

Jude 1:6-7I remind you of the angels who did not stay within the limits of authority God gave them but left the place where they belonged. God has kept them securely chained in prisons of darkness, waiting for the great day of judgment. And don’t forget Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighboring towns, which were filled with immorality and every kind of sexual perversion. Those cities were destroyed by fire and serve as a warning of the eternal fire of God’s judgment.

Proverbs 17:5Those who mock the poor insult their Maker; those who rejoice at the misfortune of others will be punished.

Ignoring God’s boundaries and discipline leaves us subject to God’s judgment. That standard is the same throughout the created order. Willful disobedience that refuses to take God’s warnings seriously comes at a terrible cost.
