What is the difference between blasphemy against God and blasphemy against the Holy Spirit?

Matthew 12:31-32Every sin and blasphemy can be forgiven—except blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, which will never be forgiven. Anyone who speaks against the Son of Man can be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven, either in this world or in the world to come.

The Son, Jesus, relates to us as God in the flesh, and he is willing to forgive our failure to recognize him. But the Holy Spirit serves as the awakener and revealer of the Son and the Father to humans; therefore, rejecting the Holy Spirit’s work in us seals our fate (see Mark 3:28-30).

John 16:8“When he [the Holy Spirit] comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment.”

We all blaspheme God in the sense that none of us ever treat God with the respect he deserves. But God recognizes our sinful nature, and he had a plan from the beginning to deal with it. He sent Jesus, his only Son, to die for our sins so that we could be holy in God’s sight. Jesus himself said that blasphemy against him can be forgiven. But it is the Holy Spirit who convicts us of sin and draws us to God in the first place. Without the work of the Holy Spirit, we cannot be saved. And without salvation, we remain separated from God, unable to enjoy a relationship with him and unable to attain eternal life. To blaspheme the Holy Spirit simply means to reject him—to utterly and completely push him away and refuse to respond to his efforts to convict you of sin and draw you to God. God knows you have reached this point even if you are still alive; both of you know your condition the moment you die.

Picture yourself drowning in the ocean thirty feet from shore. As you are about to slip under the water, someone on the shore throws you a life preserver attached to a rope. Incredibly, you refuse to grab hold of it. You may think you have good reasons—perhaps you don’t trust the life preserver, or you think you can make it to shore on your own. But in reality you have just rejected the only thing that can save your life. Blasphemy against God’s Holy Spirit is refusing to accept the lifeline that God has thrown to you. You have made the choice to drown rather than to be saved.
