Does he think he’s God?” Jesus knew what they were thinking, so he asked them, “Why do you have such evil thoughts in your hearts? Is it easier to say ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or ‘Stand up and walk’? So I will prove to you that the Son of Man has the authority on earth to forgive sins.” Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home!” And the man jumped up and went home!After Jesus said that he could heal spiritual as well as physical paralysis, those who doubted him charged him with blasphemy. He responded by proving that God had given him tremendous power to heal people’s bodies; why should his enemies doubt that he could forgive sins as well? Then the Lord said to Moses, “Take the blasphemer outside the camp, and tell all those who heard the curse to lay their hands on his head. Then let the entire community stone him to death. Say to the people of Israel: Those who curse their God will be punished for their sin. Anyone who blasphemes the Name of the Lord must be stoned to death by the whole community of Israel. Any native-born Israelite or foreigner among you who blasphemes the Name of the Lord must be put to death.”God and his name are not to be treated lightly, even in anger. The deadly dangers of this kind of blasphemy were driven home early for the Israelite nation.Isaiah 3:8Jerusalem will stumble, and Judah will fall, because they speak out against the Lord.The fall of Judah, like the fall of any nation, can be attributed to many immediate factors. Jesus himself said that blasphemy against him can be forgiven. But it is the Holy Spirit who convicts us of sin and draws us to God in the first place. Without the work of the Holy Spirit, we cannot be saved. And without salvation, we remain separated from God, unable to enjoy a relationship with him and unable to attain eternal life. To blaspheme the Holy Spirit simply means to reject him—to utterly and completely push him away and refuse to respond to his efforts to convict you of sin and draw you to God. God knows you have reached this point even if you are still alive; both of you know your condition the moment you die.Picture yourself drowning in the ocean thirty feet from shore. As you are about to slip under the water, someone on the shore throws you a life preserver attached to a rope. Incredibly, you refuse to grab hold of it. You may think you have good reasons—perhaps you don’t trust the life preserver, or you think you can make it to shore on your own. But in reality you have just rejected the only thing that can save your life. Blasphemy against God’s Holy Spirit is refusing to accept the lifeline that God has thrown to you. You have made the choice to drown rather than to be saved.
