How can I avoid betraying God?

Romans 3:23Everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.

Human beings are born God-betrayers. Until we acknowledge God as our Lord, we take for granted the gift of life and the wonders of the created order. We instinctively sense there is a God, but we tend to resist any accountability to him (see Romans 1:18-20). Furthermore, we confirm our sinful state as soon as we have the opportunity, expressing self-centeredness, jealousy, and pride even as little children. Unless God opens our eyes so we can see our true condition, we remain blind to our state of betrayal.

1 John 1:8-9If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. If we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.

We can’t avoid betraying God. Every person has sinned and will continue to sin against God. But if we realize we are sinners at heart, and if we confess our sins to God, he will forgive us. He will look at us and treat us as though we have never betrayed him.
