Everyone gets angry at times, so what should we do about it?

Ephesians 4:26-27And “don’t sin by letting anger control you.” Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, for anger gives a foothold to the devil.

We should stay under the control of the Holy Spirit through prayer, and try to resolve our anger quickly. Anger is like a skunk in the house—the smell permeates all aspects of our lives. We should not encourage the “skunk” to stay by feeding it. We need to get rid of it as soon as possible.

Matthew 5:21-24You have heard that our ancestors were told, “You must not murder” . . . But I say, if you are even angry with someone, you are subject to judgment! . . . Go and be reconciled to that person.

We should calmly communicate with those with whom we are angry in order to restore our relationship. This will likely involve listening to them and truly seeking to understand what is behind the conflict. If we reach out with unselfish concern for the other person, we will likely be able to gain a hearing.

1 Corinthians 13:5Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged.

Love is the mightiest weapon in overcoming anger. We will find staying angry at someone quite difficult when we concentrate on how much we love them and on their loveable qualities.
