What’s Most Important?

Now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

1 Corinthians 13:13

A good group game asks this question: “If you were given one hour to evacuate your home and allowed one suitcase to hold your belongings, what would you take?” The point is to force people to think about priorities; answers usually include things like family photo albums, keepsake jewelry, a valued gift, important documents—and today most people would probably include their laptop and cell phone!

Not everything in life is equally important, nor is everything in the Kingdom of God on the same plane. Of three important virtues—faith, hope, and love—Paul said that love was the “greatest.” And Jesus revealed that the first and second most important commandments out of the hundreds of commandments in Israel’s canon were about love (Matthew 22:37-39). Job loss causes many people to think afresh about what is most important in their life. When funds are limited, or the future looks scary, we begin to make choices: God, spouse, family, neighbors, health, savings—we live differently when all things are not possible.

Be aware of changes and choices you are making these days. Then, hold on to those priorities!

We live by demands when we should live by priorities.
