The Best Option

I say to myself, “The LORD is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.”

Lamentations 3:24

You’ve got options. It’s as true today as it has ever been. And we like to keep our options open. We often don’t want to commit to anything too soon because something better might come along—don’t want to accept that invitation because we might get a better one, commit to that job, school, or relationship, because we don’t know what’s ahead. Our options are limitless. We can even order our coffee thousands of different ways!

But, that kind of “options open” lifestyle can’t coexist with our choice to follow Jesus.

At some point, we have to make a dramatic decision—take a defining action—to follow Jesus’ way and no other way. By saying “I will” to Jesus, we say “I won’t” to other “options” in this life—just the way saying “I will” to my husband, Nick, when I married him meant an “I won’t” to all other men. So when we are lured toward the many things that claim to give us hope in this world, when we face other gods, other priorities, other “options,” let’s say “No.” Let’s reject the idea of any plan Bs.

Today, let’s stop weighing our options. Let’s choose Jesus once and for all!

Lord, please help me simplify my life, letting go of all the options. I choose You and Your ways today.
