Stepping Out In Faith

Stepping Out In Faith

When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.

Psalm 56:3

I love a good plan, don’t you? Sometimes it’s comforting to have your day mapped out, proportioned, confirmed, and predictable. You know exactly what to expect and how to spend your energy. Yet days rarely run according to our plan—especially when doing God’s work.

Consider the Galilean fishermen who heard Jesus say, “Follow me,” dropped their nets, and walked away from their boats (Mark 1). They exchanged a very predictable life for a very uncertain future. The only certainty was that Jesus would be leading them—and that made all the difference.

Likewise, when Jesus says, “Follow Me into the place or position or job or ministry I have for you,” we cannot wait until we have the entire blueprint before we get up and start moving. Like the fishermen, we must leave our schedules and plans behind and embrace the uncertainty. Trusting Jesus, we step into the future, not knowing how it will end. His presence with us will make all the difference.

Flexible and ready for adventure, you can give up ultimate control over the direction of your life and choose to walk by faith, not by sight. Though you might naturally feel nervous or afraid, you can trust that the One you follow is going somewhere wonderful.

Teach me, Lord, to take steps of faith into Your plan for the future.
