No More Sticks And Stones

From everlasting to everlasting the LORD’s love is with those who fear him.

Psalm 103:17

Remember that old saying, “Sticks and stones can break my bones, but names can never hurt me”? That thought may help you keep a resilient will, but it’s not true about the heart. You can be hurt plenty by labels like stupid, ignorant, alcoholic, addict, criminal, weak, or pitiful. If you allow those labels to loom larger in your heart and mind than the promises of God, they can fool you into missing God’s truth about who you are.

When your head insists that God created you in his image and loves you, but your heart and emotions keep punching away at that knowledge with thoughts like, What’s wrong with me? I never seem to do anything right!, the blows can give you an overwhelming sense of worthlessness and rejection.

But, the truth of God’s Word gives you the power to fight back. When we stop believing the lies in our thoughts, we stop giving them power. None of these labels can stand up in your mind to God’s loving truth about who you are.

Hand over any of those old sticks and stones to your loving Father. Trust the truth of God’s love for you and His promised faithfulness to you. Truths that last forever.

Holy Spirit, please blow through my mind and heart, replacing lies and labels with Your everlasting love and truths.
