God’s Interruptions

Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters. Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.

Hebrews 13:1–2

When has someone shown you unexpected hospitality? Maybe it was a compliment when you were down on yourself, a gift of support when you were having trouble with bills, or even just a word, smile, or small act of kindness when you most needed it. What would happen if we interrupted our days more often to do the same? And what if we greeted each interruption with “Lord, what do You want to do here?”

Sometimes we miss these God interruptions. Insecurities, awkwardness, and schedules can keep us from responding to interruptions God has prepared. So resist that urge and make a habit out of the following:

• Speak an encouraging word to someone in line with you.

• Acknowledge a cashier or waitress by name. That person is not your servant.

• Make eye contact when you talk to people.

• Respond patiently to people’s rudeness.

Allow God to continually soften your heart so that it beats for what His heart beats for—people. As you stay close to Him, you will start to see what He sees and love as He loves.

Lord, show me when You are sending an interruption and giving me an opportunity to love with Your love!
