Who Figured It Out

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.

WHEN JARED AND I brought Kolton home from the hospital, he was held constantly. Kolton was our first baby and my parents’ first grandchild, so during those first few days there was always someone waiting for a turn to love and rock him. But when the visitors left and Jared went back to work, I noticed that Kolton cried whenever I would lay him down in his crib. Even if he was sound asleep with a full tummy and clean diaper, he’d immediately wake up and cry when he was placed flat on his back. Truthfully, I thought all babies would wake easily and cry for their mommas when they were laid down in their bassinet. I believed it was just a newborn thing that he’d eventually outgrow. It didn’t even cross my mind that he cried because he had a medical condition that would require years of treatment.

But I figured it out. I observed. I documented. I paid attention to all the little things and the string of events that only I was there to notice. I made calls to doctors and took him to appointments and found methods that helped relieve his discomfort. I read articles online and searched for solutions. The Holy Spirit led me, and following His lead, I learned what I needed to do to help my baby.

As mommas, this is our constant commission. We wake up daily and do our best to decipher what our children need and how best to provide it. This calling never ends. It isn’t ever outgrown. It is the forward march of motherhood as we look, listen, and lean into the leading of the Holy Spirit.

The Lord gives us wisdom. He promises to show us what to do next: “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” My friend, it’s not just a good idea to ask for wisdom; it’s the best idea to believe that He desires to give it to you generously. It has never just been about your own understanding; it has been about the Lord’s continued guidance. With Him, you’ll keep figuring it out. So no matter what you’re facing tonight, trust this: The God who has led you through all your hardest places is still faithful and true. He will lead you forward.

Tonight we pray for the momma who figured it out. Lord, she may be facing a challenge right now. She may be wondering what to do or how she’s going to get to the other side of where she’s currently standing. But, Lord, You have always shown her the way in the past. You have always shown her what to do, even when she didn’t realize it was You leading her. We ask You to remind her now that You have the answers she needs. You have the strategy and solution. She can trust that You are leading her. Bring her peace tonight as she trusts You.
