A Prayer for Reading Together

Author of all things bright and beautiful,

We see You in every bedtime story

And every well-worn binding.

We see You in the coffee-stained page

And in the dancing words that come alive.

We see You in the rips and tears and folded corners

And in the tales we memorized long ago

When we were children once.

We see You in the books that make our babies laugh

And in the books that teach our toothless wonders to read

And in the books that bring our growing teens into bigger worlds.

We see You in the mysteries and adventures.

We see You in the scary stories and the sweet ones too.

And we thank You for the magic of getting lost in a book,

For we know that in the journey, You’re hidden in the margins.

We thank You, too, for libraries and teachers

And every soul who has ever read a book to a child.

We thank You for the imagination to see in a new way.

We thank You for inviting us into Your story,

The greatest story of all.
