A Prayer For Divorce

A Prayer for Divorce

O God, we come to You

Reminded that You are

Present in every transition

And in every ounce of tension.

We ask You to make Your presence known

In the pushes and pulls

Of divorce.

Our life together has changed, O Lord,

But You remain constant

As we hold an array of emotions

And walk with our children

Toward healing and wholeness.

We hold space for what has been lost

And space for the hope we may someday gain, too.

Lord, we pray for community

To surround our family

With care and compassion.

And we pray that we will extend that grace

To ourselves, too.

Be with us in the awkward spaces

We never imagined we’d find ourselves in, Lord.

Help us know You are ever-present

In every court date and custody agreement,

In the deep stretches of loneliness

And in the glimmers of hope, too,

That one day things might get better.

We come to You and ask for Your help

To walk toward forgiveness

For those who have hurt us.

And if we have inflicted pain,

We ask for Your forgiveness,

For we know that You are forgiving,

Abounding in love for those who call to You.

This is a plot twist, Lord,

And we have knots in our stomachs.

For there are days when our hearts are tattered

And we cry out to You, asking why.

Help us remember

This story isn’t over.

You are a God who shows up

And keeps showing up,

Even when we feel like

We have nothing left to give.

Help us remember

Nothing comes as a surprise to You.

In the misunderstandings,

You understand us.

In the fractured expectations,

You breathe new life.

Lord, be near in the big emotions

And the no-easy-answers.

We pray our kids will know they’re loved.

May they hold no shame or guilt

Over the dissolution of this marriage,

And may they know a parent’s love doesn’t stop

Even if partnerships sometimes do.

Help us navigate relationships

That have changed.

Help us rebuild new normals

And see You in new ways.

God, You are not finished with us,

With the story of our family.

We need You, Lord,

In the messy middle,

In the unexpected endings,

And in the new beginnings.
