A Prayer for a Creative Spirit

O Maker God,

We marvel

And sometimes scratch our heads

At these magnificent children

And the magical ways

They view the world.

O Maker God,

Help us empower our children

To be cocreators with You.

Help us encourage our children

To mix new paints and beat new drums,

Introducing us to colors and songs

We never knew before.

O Maker God,

Help us experience You

In the ways our children imagine life.

Let us see You in what they make

And in how they make it

And in how they beam

When they say,

“It is good.”

O Maker God,

Let us celebrate our children’s creative lives

By saying yes more often,

Entering into the mess,

And meeting You in new ways.

O Maker God,

We know someday

We won’t find paper-towel-roll creations

And caps off markers

And drumsticks and scattered sheet music

On the floor.

O Maker God,

May our children

Know what it is to blaze their own trail,

To go their own way,

And to create something entirely new,

Hand in hand

With You.
