Walking One Step at a Time

Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.

Psalm 119:105

What a great promise this verse is, assuring you that God’s Word will light your path. When God shows you a step to take and you take it, he gives you the light you need for the next step. In my experience, he rarely reveals the entire path or the whole blueprint. Instead, he reveals the next step in his plan.

What are your interests and gifts? What are you passionate about? To what do you sense God calling you? As you discover these things, you can begin following the guidance he gives you one step at a time. What are those things God has planned for you and for me to do? I believe there are songs God wants someone to write, stories he wants told, missionary projects he has in mind, inner-city programs for tutoring at-risk kids. There are children crying in orphanages here and abroad, and he wants loving families to adopt them. He wants someone to share the gospel with unreached people groups. He has rescue operations already planned in heaven and is looking for willing vessels to carry them out on earth. But just like a miner who wears a hat that casts a beam six feet ahead to give just enough light to illuminate his next steps, until we walk those six feet, we won’t be able to see more of the path God has for us.

Taking those steps often involves risk. In fact, someone once said that the word faith is really spelled R-I-S-K. Taking those steps may lead you to a country across the world, as it did my friend Paula, who served in Thailand for more than twenty years. Following God’s direction may lead you to a little school in Florida to teach migrant workers’ children, to a publishing company in a big city, or to any of a myriad of other destinies. It doesn’t matter what age you are or at what stage of life. If you follow God’s light, amazing things will happen on the adventure, and you’ll never be bored. —CHERI

Lord, I trust you to light my path, to lead me and show me the first step and each succeeding step to take in following your will. But this is stretching my faith, so please give me daily courage for the journey.
