Our Source of Safety and Security

Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. This I declare about the LORD: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him. Psalm 91:1-2

When Lisa Beamer’s husband, Todd, died in the crash of Flight 93, which was hijacked by terrorists on September 11, 2001, her dependence on God as her source of safety and a realization of a bigger picture enabled her to experience a peace and inner strength that mystified the media and inspired a nation. What was her secret? The foundation of Lisa’s strength was that her security was in God rather than in anything or anyone in this world. She chose the Lord’s thoughts instead of her own and thus was able to look at things as he did.

On the day Lisa’s husband died, symbols of human power and security—the World Trade Center and the Pentagon—were shaken. Lisa faced the impending birth of their daughter and the prospect of raising three children alone in the midst of great uncertainty, grief, and loss. And not just once but day after day she had to deal with the question of where she was going to find true security as a single mother. She found that security in a loving heavenly Father, who cannot be shaken and who would always be faithful to her and her children, so she could trust him completely. In the years since that painful day, God has never failed her.

We may not face anything with the enormity of what Lisa Beamer dealt with, but we are all bound to face a tragedy, a crisis, or a storm that is uncontrollable and not of our choosing. By getting our own big-picture perspective on life, we will realize and experience that the Lord is our only source of security, and therefore, in him we find our peace. —CHERI
