A Promised Peace

A Promised Peace

[Jesus said,] “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.” John 14:27

When Jesus spoke these words to his disciples, he was on a journey to the Cross and knew his followers would face confusion, fear, and sorrow. That’s why he told them these things while he was still with them (see John 14:25). He would not leave them alone or comfortless. He would send the Holy Spirit to dwell within them, teach them everything they needed to know, and remind them of what Jesus had taught. And through the Spirit, the legacy Jesus was leaving them was peace—a peace that is beyond all human understanding, a peace that money can’t buy and that isn’t like the transient peace the world offers. The disciples didn’t have to be troubled or afraid no matter what hard times they would face because they had peace with God through Christ.

Maybe you wonder how you can have peace when you’re facing the loss of your job, a family crisis, or the prospect of surgery. With threats of terrorism around the world and the uncertainty of the economy, where is peace to be found? This verse tells us that peace is found in Christ. Just as God gave peace to his followers—men who were flawed and afraid and would even abandon their Savior in his hour of need—he offers peace to us. Not because we have it all together or are worthy of his gifts, but because he is the Prince of Peace and all who are called by his name are recipients of his peace. —CHERI

Lord Jesus, you promised a daily supply of peace to all those who believe in you and trust you. I ask you now for the peace I need today through your Holy Spirit, who lives in me.

In Christ we are relaxed and at peace in the midst of the confusions, bewilderments, and perplexities of this life. The storm rages, but our hearts are at rest. We have found peace at last! —BILLY GRAHAM, AMERICAN EVANGELIST
