The Power of the Truth

Sitting across from Jason and Trista in the restaurant, Gail could hardly believe that they were really her brother and sister-in-law. Instead of two angry people fighting and cursing at each other, she saw a loving couple treating each other with respect. When Gail had referred them to a Christian counselor, she hadn’t expected such an amazing transformation, but she rejoiced to see it. After only eight months, Jason and Trista had joined a church and Bible study, cleaned up their lifestyle, and revived their marriage.

Huldah also rejoiced to see people responding to God’s truth. Her message about God’s judgment on Israel’s idol worship ignited a national revival. Led by King Josiah, the people abandoned their idols, renewed their covenant with God, and promised to obey him. Israel’s judgment could not be avoided after so many years of rejecting God’s calls for repentance, but God did postpone it because of King Josiah’s obedience. How Huldah must have praised God to see the hearts of her fellow Israelites turn back to God.

It’s amazing to see how God’s truth can transform people. His Word has the ability to renew relationships, soften hearts, and revive our zest for living. As our attitudes and desires change, the internal transformation affects our behavior and lifestyles. But in order to be changed by the Word, we have to do more than carry a Bible to church on Sundays. God wants us to study the Scriptures so we can know him more intimately, discern his will, and apply it to the way we live. As we respond to what he shows us, we discover the amazing power of his truth to change our lives. And he rejoices at our transformation.

The word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
