False Sense of Security

False Women Prophets

Read: Ezekiel 13:17-23

God led Ezekiel to denounce the false prophets in Israel who had been leading God’s people astray. These false women prophets sold magic charms that supposedly protected their wearers from illness and harm. Their gullible customers never suspected that these charms were luring them into idolatry. The women prophets also passed off their own opinions as revelations from God and predicted peace for the people of Jerusalem. God predicted judgment for the prophets who encouraged wicked people to continue in their sin by promising that everything would be fine.

Today, we seem to have a wider variety of false prophets than ever before. Many people imagine something and promote it as a revelation from God. Teachers and religions that focus on God’s love and grace while denying his promised judgment of sin are especially growing in popularity. The idea that God would never allow someone to go to hell deceives many into thinking that their eternal destinies are secure, much like the gullible people referred to in Ezekiel. Some people claim that what they believe about God doesn’t matter much as long as they acknowledge the existence of a “Higher Power.”

Since our culture is obsessed with tolerance, many people think that one belief system is as good as any other. If we question what someone teaches, we may be accused of attacking that person’s religious freedom. But God teaches that the only way to come to him is through faith in Jesus Christ as the Savior who died for our sins. We want to make sure that we are depending on God’s truth, not on some man-made philosophy that gives a false sense of security. Then we never have to worry about hearing those awful words on Judgment Day: “I never knew you. Get away from me” (Matthew 7:23).

They offer superficial treatments for my people’s mortal wound. They give assurances of peace when there is no peace.
