Seeing God’s Presence

Women In The Exodus

Read: Exodus 13:17-22

As the sun began to sink, so did my spirits. I had decided to try a different route on this trip since the printed directions seemed easy enough. Suddenly, the road had divided, and I now realized that I had chosen the wrong side. After stopping twice for directions and driving in circles for twenty-five minutes, I still wasn’t on the road I needed. Now, I sat in my car trying not to cry like a baby. I had no idea which direction to take.

The Hebrew women coming out of Egypt didn’t have to wonder which way to turn. God led them by a pillar of cloud during the day and a pillar of fire at night. All these women had ever known was slavery and oppression; now, they had the all-powerful God of the universe visibly assuring them of his presence, love, and guidance. As they journeyed through the wilderness on the way to the Promised Land, one look at the cloud or the fire ahead of them confirmed the direction they should take.

We don’t have these visible signs from God, but we have two blessings that the Hebrews did not have. We have God’s Spirit living in us permanently, which became possible after Jesus’ death and resurrection. God’s Spirit confirms that we belong to him and directs us toward godly choices when we remain sensitive to his leading. The second blessing is the Bible, which assures us of God’s love and also offers divine guidance. When we have tough choices to make, we may wish that God would write directions on a sticky note and post them on our refrigerators. But he has promised to lead us on our life journeys by internal signs.

Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.
