Protected by the Blood

Women At The First Passover

Read: Exodus 12:1-13

The young woman squinted at the document in her hand. Just ten months ago she thought she’d found the perfect boyfriend. That was before she discovered how violent he was when he drank. After he lost his job, his temper flared up more than ever. She still had a bruise from the last time she’d talked about leaving him. But it was the way he had erupted when her toddler walked into the room that finally made her decide to get the court order of protection. Now, she wondered if a piece of paper could really protect her and her son.

Did the Hebrew women who celebrated the first Passover wonder if their families would really be protected? God had told each Hebrew family to slaughter an unblemished lamb and smear some of the blood on their doorframe. Later that night, he judged Egypt by killing every firstborn son. But when the angel of death saw the blood on the Israelites’ doorframes, he passed over their homes. God accepted the substitution of the lambs for their firstborn sons. Although Moses had passed along God’s words, many mothers must have watched their oldest sons anxiously that long night, especially as the wails arose from grief-stricken Egyptian mothers.

Court orders are often effective, but unfortunately, they can’t guarantee safety. God is the only One who can truly protect us. Being his children doesn’t mean that nothing bad will ever happen to us, but it does mean that he is in control of our lives even when we face dangerous situations. It also means that we are protected from eternal judgment for sin. If we have accepted Christ as our perfect Passover lamb, then we have God’s promise for the eternal protection of our souls—and that promise is written with the blood of his Son.

Since we have been made right in God’s sight by the blood of Christ, he will certainly save us from God’s condemnation.
