One Plan, Many Roles

Women In Moses’ Life

God allowed Moses to accomplish amazing things when he confronted the powerful pharaoh of Egypt and then led an estimated two million people and their livestock on a journey through the desert. Although Moses was the Israelites’ guide, primary judge, and spiritual leader, God assigned crucial roles to several women as he carried out his plan to deliver his people from slavery.

When Pharaoh ordered the death of all newborn Hebrew males, the Hebrew midwives refused to obey. Jochebed, Moses’ mother, devised an ingenious plan to save her infant son. Pharaoh’s daughter defied her father’s decree when her compassion was moved by the baby floating on the Nile. Thanks to Miriam’s courage and quick thinking, Moses’ own mother was assigned to nurse him. This gave her the opportunity to influence her son during his early years before he went to live in the palace with Pharaoh’s daughter, where he received the best education available.

Each of these women played an important part in the process that prepared Moses to be Israel’s deliverer. Probably none of them realized that their actions were helping to set in motion a plan that would change world history. Later, when the dramatic events unfolded, did they look back in amazement at how God had involved them in his work?

Sometimes it may not seem that we fill an important role among Christ’s followers, but there are no insignificant assignments in God’s work. When we are faithful in carrying out the tasks he gives us, we play a key role in his unfolding plan even if our part is invisible to the world. It doesn’t matter if we play a starring role or a supporting role, as long as we act as he directs.
