Where the Rubber Meets the Road

It’s impossible to grow up in Michigan, as I did, and not know who Henry Ford was. I had relatives working at the Ford plants in Detroit and all around southern Michigan. In the 1960s and 1970s, the automobile industry was a major part of Michigan life.

Developing the first car wasn’t accomplished without challenges, not least of which was convincing people they needed it. Think about it for a moment. Generally speaking, people had no idea what Ford had created. It wasn’t in their wildest imaginations. As Henry Ford was heard to have said, “If I’d asked people what they wanted, they would have said a faster horse.” Little did folks know that what he had created would be such a benefit to them and their lifestyles.

It can be like that in business, where we don’t see the opportunities before us for progress or growth or an improved product, process, or way of doing something that could be a benefit to many. People make a living helping businesses with strategic planning and thinking outside of the usual boxes to improve what they do.

It can also be like that with God’s Word. So many people are blissfully ignorant of the abundant life that Christ is offering. They go through life, often going through the motions of church and worship without ever fully connecting to the source of power that is truly available to them, not thinking they are missing the peace, abundant life, and promises that flow from that power.

They know they need something, but can’t pinpoint what it is. That’s why so many people settle for merely getting a faster “horse”—more possessions, more free time, the things they think will make them happy. Why not share with them what a relationship with Jesus Christ has added to your life? The benefits are more valuable than a new car. Reignite a fire in their hearts.
