Taking Care of Friday

Just as each person is destined to die once and after that comes judgment, so also Christ died once for all time as a sacrifice to take away the sins of many people. He will come again, not to deal with our sins, but to bring salvation to all who are eagerly waiting for him. Hebrews 9:27-28

This is so straightforward and simple, it almost seems unnecessary to say.

Jesus died to make things right between us and God—a sacrifice to serve as our punishment for the sin in our lives that separates us from God.

You can imagine what it must have been like during those horrific events surrounding Jesus’ crucifixion. On Friday Jesus is still hanging on the cross. Mary Magdalene is weeping; the disciples are distraught, running around in every direction like sheep without a shepherd; Jesus is spit upon and mocked on the cross; people uncaringly walk by Him as He hangs on the cross. Pilate has washed his hands of the whole thing, the Pharisees are running the show, and the Roman soldiers are strutting around with their spears in the air. It’s Friday, and there seems to be no hope left in the world.

Mary and the disciples have forgotten all that Jesus said would happen three days later. She stands there defeated, unable to see that Sunday has come.

What about for us today—is it Friday for us in some part of our lives? Is it Friday for some friend we know or a family member we hold dear? Are we struggling to make ends meet? Do our career paths no longer seem fulfilling? Are there relationships that need restoring in our lives? Are there areas or habits in our lives that we can’t seem to change? Do we still carry baggage from our pasts that we can’t let go of and forgive ourselves for? Do our regrets for all we wish we had done in our lives hold us back from becoming all that God created us to be today and every day? Are there hurts, pains, and scars that just won’t heal?

Has it been a while since you’ve spent time with the risen Lord or been in His church? Is it time to meet Him again? Through His sacrifice, your sins have been dealt with. He doesn’t have to die again or do anything else except come back for you.
